WEB 1.0 WEBSITE EVALUATION

In this post, I'll be analysing Web 1.0 websites following the guidelines suggested by Dudeney & Hockly (2007), and taking as an example a lesson on the topic of TRAVELLING, for a group of INTERMEDIATE level students.


1) MERRIAM WEBSTER VISUAL DICTIONARY ONLINE


Visual Dictionary Online. (n.d.). Retrieved from http://www.visualdictionaryonline.com/transport-machinery/air-transport.php

Accuracy: if we click on “About us”, the site provides information about who created the website and when. QA INTERNATIONAL’s products are created by an in-house team of experts, experienced editors, highly skilled illustrators and talented designers.

Currency: it is up-to-date.

Content: it’s visually attractive and organized.

Functionality: the links work well, and the site provides a link to the Visual Dictionary APP, which can be installed on PC and MAC platforms among others.
 


2) ONLINE NEWSPAPER THE GUARDIAN

Accuracy: The Guardian has no proprietor and just one shareholder, The Scott Trust.

Currency: it is up-to-date.

Content: it’s visually attractive and organized. The site allows users to become members by subscribing, and they can also contribute to the newspaper by donating money.

Functionality: the links work well.




3) INSIDER NEWSPAPER

Accuracy: This site belongs to Business Insider, which is an American financial and business news website. The article was written by Meredith Cash, who has been graduated from Duke University in 2018 with a major in political science and a certificate in policy journalism.

Currency: it is up-to-date.

Content: This webpage is organized in different topics such as Life and Business, and it's visually appealing.

Functionality: the links work well, and lead to internal and external websites.



4) NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

Accuracy: National Geographic is a well-known organization with good reputation, and therefore the articles may be considered reliable.

Currency: it is up-to-date.

Content: it's engaging, and the article has hyperlinked words that lead to internal sites which enlarge on the topic.

Functionality: the website is easy to navigate, and there are no broken links.




5) A4ESL.ORG

Accuracy: This website is part of a project of The Internet TESL Journal,which has thousands of contributions by many teachers.

Currency: it is not up-to-date.

Content: it’s organized but not visually appealing.

Functionality: the site works well and there are links which lead to exernal websites.




6) WORLD ATLAS

Accuracy: WorldAtlas has had a presence online since 1994 and it is driven by a team of committed writers, as well as a small editorial and web development team. This site is owned by Reunion Technology Inc.

Currency: The website was last updated in 2018.


Content: it's visually appealing and well-organized.


Functionality:  The site works well and there are no broken links.



7) BBC NEWS


London's top tourist attractions see visitor numbers fall. (2018, March 16). Retrieved from https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-43417939 


Accuracy: The BBC is the world’s leading public service broadcaster. The Executive Committee is responsible for delivering the BBC’s services, and it's chaired by Tony Hall, the Director-General, and consists of fifteen directors who lead large operations areas of the BBC. At the end of the article there is a link on why you can trust BBC News 

Currency: it is up-to-date. This article was published in March 16th, 2018.

Content: It's visually organized and attractive. This website allows visitors to become members by subscribing.

Functionality: the site works well and users can share the articles and receive notifications of the BBC News.
